# Art grants: guides and precedents for Enceladus Within

Researched September 30, 2026. This is a curated reading library, not an award
application or a record of organizer approval. The strongest precedents combine
a clear human experience with an artwork that can be installed again elsewhere.
Our recommendations are inferences from the work and published guidance, not
claims about a jury's private reasoning.

## Read these first

| Guide | What to take from it | Stage and limits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Love Burn art application and approval notice](https://theloveburn.com/artsubmissions) | Placement and/or grant route; an official Art Committee Offer Notice establishes the offered grant, size, placement and approval after review. | Current application route is [the official art portal](https://theloveburn.com/art), which links to Airtable. Organizer conversations are not an award. |
| [Love Burn artist interview](https://theloveburn.com/artistinterview) | Explain interactivity, the team that will build it, and the idea's ability to inspire. | Published considerations, not a verified copy of the 2027 form or a scoring formula. |
| [Love Burn ticket and logistics questions](https://theloveburn.com/ticketquestions) | Crew access, ticket planning, power expectations and registration need their own answers. | Page contains mixed-year material; confirm the actual 2027 offer and placement instructions. The [project's existing research](love-burn-research.md) distinguishes current and historical rules. |
| [Burning Man Honoraria criteria and FAQ](https://burningman.org/black-rock-city/bring-your-art/art-grants-programs/brc-honoraria/) | Physical sculptural art, visual impact and participation; explain what exists without a performance. Partial funding and scope tiers are supported. | Separate program. Its FAQ recommends requesting 40–60% of total budget and says awards over $20,000 are rare. These are not Love Burn limits or promises. |
| [Burning Man 2027 LOI instructions](https://burningman.org/black-rock-city/bring-your-art/art-grants-programs/brc-honoraria/submit_grant/) | Draft before entering the portal. Follow its linked 2027 preview document, then submit through Burner Profiles. | LOI first; full proposal only if invited. The preview document itself could not be fetched in this research, so its exact questions and word limits are not reproduced. |
| [What to expect after a Burning Man award](https://burningman.org/black-rock-city/bring-your-art/art-grants-programs/brc-honoraria/art-grants-expect/) | Read the delivery obligations before promising a design: contracting, liaison coordination, technical planning, installation, documentation and removal. | Award administration guidance. Some onsite resources are charged against the performance deposit; assistance is not automatically free. |
| [2013 Burning Man Honorarium guide](https://burningman.org/wp-content/uploads/Art-2013-honorarium-guide-final-v2.pdf) | Study how selected artworks explain their premise, physical form and interaction together. Truth is Beauty appears on printed page 128. | An official collection of funded-project descriptions, **not the successful applicants' full applications**, budgets or reviewer score sheets. Historical rules are not current eligibility. |
| [Lakes of Fire art grants](https://lakesoffire.org/departments/arthub/art-grants/) | A useful regional-burn example of strict cost eligibility: new art or additions, community access, raw-material costs. | Page describes the **past 2026 cycle**, closed January 18, 2026. It excludes labor and reusable tools/equipment, including projectors and cameras. Do not copy these exclusions into Love Burn's rules. |
| [AfrikaBurn grant preparation notice](https://www.afrikaburn.org/afrikaburn-events/grant-application-deadline/) | Clear project information and a realistic detailed budget help community assessment; ask the program for clarification early. | Official notice lists October 23, 2026 without a clock time. A full policy/scoring rubric was not successfully retrieved; none is invented here. |
| [NYFA: Grant Writing Basics](https://www.nyfa.org/knowledge-base/fundraising-applications/grant-writing-basics-how-to-put-your-best-foot-forward-with-funders/) | Check funder fit first. Clarify the artistic idea, then make the narrative and supporting material work together. | General artist fundraising guidance from 2023, not Love Burn requirements. |
| [NYFA: Building a Project Budget](https://www.nyfa.org/news/archive/building-a-project-budget/) | Itemize expenses, distinguish cash from in-kind help, identify committed versus pending income, and revise estimates as the project develops. | General budgeting guidance from 2017. A balanced funding plan must not disguise unconfirmed contributions. |
| [Creative Capital 2027 application handbook](https://creative-capital.org/applicationhandbook) | Useful model for contextual work-sample captions, deliberate sample selection and a dated milestone timeline. | A different grant program; eligibility and application availability are not established here. Its Round II rules reject promo/pitch reels. Do not assume our cinematic previs is a compliant sample for every funder. |

### Dates that are actually published

Love Burn's [2027 ticket page](https://tickets.theloveburn.com/2027) lists art final
submissions on **September 30, 2026**. A closing hour and timezone remain
unverified. There is no midnight assumption or countdown here.

Burning Man's separate **2027** cycle opens **October 1, 2026 at noon Pacific**;
the LOI closes **October 29, 2026 at 5 p.m. Pacific**. Invited full proposals are
due **January 11, 2027 at 5 p.m. Pacific**. These times are explicitly published
in the [LOI instructions](https://burningman.org/black-rock-city/bring-your-art/art-grants-programs/brc-honoraria/submit_grant/).

## Funded work with a documented life beyond the playa

“Got big” here means a documented museum presentation, civic placement or touring
history. It does not mean a verified large grant, profitability, or evidence that
the grant caused later success. **Individual award amounts were not established
for any of the following projects.**

### Shrumen Lumen — FoldHaus, 2016

**Funding:** named in the [official 2016 Honoraria awards](https://journal.burningman.org/2016/03/burning-man-arts/brc-art/introducing-the-2016-black-rock-city-honoraria-art-installations/).
**Later reach:** the [artist's exhibition record](https://www.foldhaus.com/shrumen-lumen)
lists the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery in 2018 and the New York Botanical Garden
in 2024; [Smithsonian's account](https://americanart.si.edu/blog/eye-level/2018/19/57577/sneak-peek-burning-man-unfolds-renwick)
documents its museum presentation. The glowing origami mushrooms respond to
visitor pressure pads with movement and light.

**Enceladus lesson:** one understandable action can create a memorable encounter.
Prototype that action and its visible response before multiplying mechanisms.
The dated exhibition history is evidence of past reach, not a current booking.

### Firmament → the related Nova — Christopher Schardt

**Funding:** Firmament is a [2016 Honoraria recipient](https://journal.burningman.org/2016/03/burning-man-arts/brc-art/introducing-the-2016-black-rock-city-honoraria-art-installations/).
**Later reach:** [Smithsonian's Nova profile](https://americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/burning-man/online/christopher-schardt)
explains how Firmament's celestial LED environment relates to the more compact
Nova, exhibited at the Renwick in 2018–2019 using the same program and LED
configuration. Nova is a related adaptation; this does not establish a separate
Honoraria award for Nova or that Firmament itself was the museum object.

**Enceladus lesson:** design a place people want to spend time together. A reusable
content system and an adaptable display can support later venues without
rebuilding the artistic premise.

### The Space Whale — Matthew Schultz and the Pier Group with Android Jones

**Funding:** named in the [2016 Honoraria awards](https://journal.burningman.org/2016/03/burning-man-arts/brc-art/introducing-the-2016-black-rock-city-honoraria-art-installations/).
**Later reach:** Nevada's official tourism publication describes the stained-glass
whales in [Reno's City Plaza](https://travelnevada.com/nevada-magazine/open-air-galleries/).
This is documented civic display, not a verified current condition report or an
individual grant amount.

**Enceladus lesson:** the ocean/space connection can be legible in the physical
form itself. Include daylight appearance and the surrounding public space in
the proposal, alongside the night sequence.

### Truth is Beauty — Marco Cochrane, 2013

**Funding:** included in the official [2013 Honorarium guide](https://burningman.org/wp-content/uploads/Art-2013-honorarium-guide-final-v2.pdf),
whose introduction identifies the featured works as selected funded projects.
**Later reach:** [San Leandro's June 2017 planning report](https://sanleandro.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?FullText=1&GUID=65E929E8-15DF-46E9-8BD7-20FC040679F7&ID=3076860&Options=&Search=)
records completion of the sculpture at the technology campus in 2016.

**Enceladus lesson:** a clear human subject and artistic question can carry a
large technical work. State what human presence means here before describing
cameras and mounts. This sculpture is no precedent for an occupied enclosure.

### Pulse and Bloom — Shilo Shiv Suleman and collaborators, 2014

**Funding:** [Burning Man's artist profile](https://journal.burningman.org/2021/09/burning-man-arts/global-art/boundless-space-artist-stories-part-3/)
explicitly confirms the 2014 Honoraria grant. The lotus installation translates
participants' heartbeats into light.
**Later reach:** collaborator Saba Ghole's [Boston Tech Poetics speaker biography](https://techpoetics.com/)
reports a tour of festivals and galleries across three continents. Treat this
as a collaborator biography's account; individual tour dates and attendance
were not independently verified.

**Enceladus lesson:** human presence need not require a live reconstructed body
inside a sphere. An external, optional input could express the same idea more
simply. Do not turn the artwork's heartbeat language into a medical claim.

## A recent funded comparison, without a claimed touring history

### ORBs — David Oliver, 2025

**Funding:** listed in the [2025 Honoraria announcement](https://journal.burningman.org/2025/03/burning-man-arts/brc-art/introducing-brc-2025-honoraria-art/).
The [2025 installation archive](https://history.burningman.org/brc-history/event-archives/2025-event-archive/2025-art-installations/)
describes luminous stained-glass spheres on plant-like structures. **Later reach:
not established in this research.**

**Enceladus lesson:** an unoccupied sphere can have a complete sculptural identity.
Use it to challenge whether the proposal actually needs a truck, occupant or
camera system to communicate its core idea.

## Closest form references with a different funding story

### Museum of the Moon — Luke Jerram

The [artist's description](https://my-moon.org/about/) documents a touring,
internally illuminated, seven-metre moon using NASA imagery. It is not a
projection-mapped human enclosure. Its [partners page](https://my-moon.org/partners/)
credits a co-commissioning consortium, not Burning Man Honoraria. The artist's
[2018 Beijing presentation record](https://my-moon.org/installations/beijing-olympic-water-cube/)
reports more than 200,000 visitors.

**Enceladus lesson:** the closest celestial-sphere reference suggests an alternate
route: a recognizable object, sound and venue-specific programming. A science
venue or festival co-commission could be a future funding strategy, not a
currently secured partner or a substitute for this Love Burn application.

### Sonic Sphere — Ed Cooke, Merijn Royaards, Nicholas Christie and team

[The Shed's 2023 program](https://www.theshed.org/program/304-sonic-sphere?feed_item=403)
documents a 65-foot suspended spherical concert hall, presented June 16–July 30.
This is a strong immersive/suspension comparison. **A Burning Man grant was not
verified.** The host page was available through indexed program text; a direct
fetch encountered its queue page.

**Enceladus lesson:** occupied suspension brings a full architectural and
operational scope. Use this as an ambition reference, not a load-rating,
enclosure-suitability or budget shortcut for the truck proposal.

## How to use the examples honestly

1. Put two or three relevant references in an internal mood board. Describe
Enceladus's own artistic contribution; recognizable similarity is not a
   funding argument by itself.
2. Keep **award evidence**, **later exhibition evidence**, **budget facts** and
**our interpretation** separate. A program-wide funding total is not an
individual project's grant. Exhibition does not establish revenue.
3. Show the smallest complete visitor experience and a credible path to making
it. More risk or a larger budget does not automatically make stronger art.
4. Link to artists' and institutions' image galleries for study. No third-party
photographs, application texts or designs have been republished as our own.
5. Recheck the live funder's fields and sample requirements before submission.
Our site requires tailnet access or an authorized Authentik account. External
   reviewers need actual form attachments or an approved accessible copy/account;
do not rely exclusively on links they cannot open.

No full winning applications, confidential budgets, jury notes or undisclosed
grant amounts were obtained. Public selection descriptions and documented
outcomes are the evidence this library provides.
